And because the Universe has a twisted sense of humour: this trip that was put off twice because of Covid? I got Covid on it. lol.

I should add... I did explore alternative arrangements after getting the e-mail:

Bikeflights = $1000 one-way (and uses UPS so if that statement re: Alaska Air Cargo is free, not a better option)
Bellingham -> Juneau ferry (minimum $2400 (USD, so ~ $3100 Cdn) round trip, not including a cabin, takes 4 days each way and I'd need to leave Saturday and add hotel days in Juneau
Riding my bike ;-) -> according to google maps, 65h not including ferry time for the 4 ferries. One of those ferries only runs twice a month and won't depart next until 2 weeks after the race.

The FB group was in an uproar over this and people were sharing their comms with Alaska Air. One person was told they should change their flights to arrive a week sooner than they needed their bike in order to ensure it would get there in time. A week!! Others were jumping to Fedex and UPS it to a local bike shop that offered to receive their bikes early. Except someone else posted that Fedex and UPS use Alaska Air cargo... which the e-mail from Alaska Air said couldn't be relied on either.

Given that I was going up there to DNF, after ruminating on this all night, I settled on "still a vacation to Alaska".

Then I compared the air & hotel costs for worst case scenario: 5 rainy days in a small town, spectating a race I was meant to do with the cost of booking a 7-day cruise to Alaska next week. It's about half as much to do the cruise.

So I canceled. Trying to decide what to do with my fitness now. Last Sunday when I was riding, I actually thought "I feel really bike fit" and I nevvvvverrrr feel positive about my fitness.

  • 0 to hero in 10 weeks/Oh shit my Ironman is only 71 days away

    We are cursed!

I've been battling what is either tendonitis or a stress fracture for ~6 weeks and my IM is 27 days away. It is now looking like an unofficial aquabike (reframed because that sounds better than a DNF). I didn't need another hat & finisher's shirt anyway.

  • New year, new bike!

    It’s been 7 hours and 35 days…

[did you read this to the tune of Sinnead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares 2 U? Am I aging myself?]

    …my bike shipped!

It was an exciting many hours of waiting for DHL notifications… until the first one, letting me know it missed its flight and is hanging out in Cincinnati for an indeterminate period. Bah!

    Such a roller coaster.

Hahaha... someone from this group once sent me an unsolicited dick pick. Looked a lot like the duke.

I don't know why someone would do that in the first place, let alone if they weren't regularly grooming!

If we are still counting hours instead of calories… 15 & change. But I strained my calf yesterday in solidarity with @James Lange so I expect my hours to go down and calories up as It heals and I drown my sorrows in wine.

I had 7 calf tears in an 18 month period a few years back and I thought I’d turned a corner but it turns out, it was just that sitting on the couch lessens your chance of sports related injury!

  • Rooster COVID-19 Report

Learned an important lesson in not trusting my gut. Was booked to attend a training camp in California Thursday-Sunday. Went back and forth over whether to cancel or not but ultimately elected to go. Flew down Thursday am when Canada had level 3 (avoid non essential travel) for just 3 countries (China, Iran, Italy). YVR like a ghost town. Plane down pretty empty. Shortly after arriving in Cali, learned B.C. government was advising against all international travel and that everyone returning (including from US) would have to self-isolate for 14 days. Training camp canceled before first training session. Spent Friday am trying unsuccessfully to contact airline by phone to change flight home. Gave up and bought a new ticket. After checking in for flight, got email alert from federal government to return home while still could. Came home on packed flight. Was gone about 36h, zero training, now on 14d self-isolation, and wishing I had trusted my gut. Canada’s level 3 travel advisory was updated today to all countries. Lots of events canceled locally but our public health officer although banning events over 250 people, has said go out and play, shop, go to restaurants. TP and sanitizer hysteria in full swing here. Lots of wine and tofu though.

  • Post a picture or .gif that sums up your last workout

@Struang I’ve been heavier (ha!) but I’ve also been lighter. I already exercise a lot so I’m afraid I may have to lay off the booze ... there goes my sunny disposition!!

    Which IMs are you doing?
