Laurent had a heart defect that they had known about for a few years now. I believe previously he had collapsed in a race and cardiac arrest in a pool last year (which forced him into retirement). Heart defects in athletes are fairly common, at least compared to the general population. The Sports Gene by David Epstein touches on this and is a good book.
I have no idea, maybe he did had done drugs at some point, but the fact that the very first post, in this forum, on this subject is about drugs is a little sad. I'm tempted to start a new RIP thread where none of this is mentioned.
I like the Slowtwitch thread on Laurent much more *braces for attack*
"Hi Callum, I'm a kiwi looking for a place to crash in colorado for a few days in July. Was wondering if I could join the NZ high performance long distance base. I will sleep outside, explore/sightsee/indulge in state approved activities during the day, and in the evening happy to cook meals for the boys. Triathlon-wise I did an 11.02 at ironman NZ this year so while I'm there you guys can draw from my experience."
A decent proposal but he never replied. I ended up in a cheap run down hostel with homeless people for a couple of days until some of my shit got stolen and I decided to fly to LA earlier than intended.
Does he harbour any guilt regarding my Colorado experience?
Thank you for interviewing him. Even in NZ I don't hear too much about him. Keen to see what races he is planning to do to try to get some points. He must be doing some of the continental cups in NZ/Aus over our summer
