F1 Montreal Weekend

Craig_DCraig_D Member, Rooster Endurance Member, POTM

Looking for some info from the peeps familiar with Montreal. Family trip to see the F1 race. Everyone is older than 21. What are the must visit food / restaurant recommendations? What are some good clubs to send the kids too to see what poor life choices they can make? Arriving Thursday and leaving Monday. Staying across the river from the race in Old Montreal.

Let us know how it goes. My daughter got into F1 after watching the Netflix series. Wouldn't mind taking her to a race. My father is trying to get a family trip to Monaco next year but not sure it will come to fruition.

@Martin and @Matt are to Montreal as @bbculp is to Chicago, except smarter and far less irritating.

Absolutely @wchevron My middle boy is right into it. All my kids got hooked so we are all meeting there for the weekend. I’m pretty sure he’s going to live at the track. He did a bunch of research on the race and got us tickets at turns 8 and 9. Tickets sold out pretty quickly so if you decide go you need to get on it as soon as they are available.

@Craig_D So at this point the better question is where can you get in, since most places will be booked.

    Casual:
Schwartz's for smoked meat. You can take out and eat in a park if the lineup is too big, or cross the street to Le Main which is equally good.

La Banquise. I don't know anyone who has eaten here sober but they make a good poutine.

Atwater Market - I think the summer food court is open. Satay Brothers pork buns for sure.

Along the Lachine Canal you can hit about six micros in a 3 km stagger. Start at Sans Taverne, à co-op micro and pizza restaurant with a nice terrasse. Next hit 4 Origines. Then Mémento. Then the Bateau Mouche floating bar at Marche Atwater. Then Sainte Ambroise. Then Messorem Bracitorum. Then Curl up in a ball. Be careful at Messorem. They have insanely strong beers that taste like fruit juice.

For fancy food, the usual suspects are Joe Beef, Liverpool House, Pied de Cochon, Park, Toque, Ferreira, Garde-manger. Hope for a cancellation.

In Old Montreal you could try Holder, Brasserie Boris (duck fat French fries, awesome terrasse), Méchant Boeuf, Jellyfish or Jellyfish Bar.

À little kitschy but good food and scenery: Portus 360. Restaurant on top of a former hotel now university residence. Les enfants terribles on top of Place Ville Marie is good for this as well and has a better vibe.

Slap an Apple stalker tag on your kids and send them to Saint Laurent street north of Sherbrooke. Pick them up on your way to the airport. Or not. I would maybe avoid the clubs in Old Montreal that weekend. Well, any weekend. Saint Laurent will be more touristy and probably safer all around.

If your kids are borderline underage, pm me and I'll find out where my 17 year old gets served🙄.

@Matt Is younger and cooler than me so should have better advice.

This just in: @wchevron is going to get one hell of an inheritance some day. I'm almost divorced, and taking applications for my next failed marriage. Contingent on no pre-nup...

Seriously, though, as cool as Monaco would be to experience, the racing itself is usually pretty boring. Very few opportunities to overtake, even with the new car designs. You just try to put pressure on the person in front and force a mistake. But unlike other tracks, they know you can't get by. So that pressure doesn't mean much until the one in back makes a mistake and hits the leader from behind. My vote goes for Interlagos if you're going to travel.

@Craig_D fun! I can only remember one club name from my days of sneaking into clubs in Montreal and fortunately for you, it has closed. No Club 281 for you.

If nothing's changed in 35 years, the food court in the metro station by McGill has the best poutine.

Really... I haven't been back in 9 years so I have no good recommendations. Jealous though, it's a great city. Have fun! Encourage your kids to ditch you so they can really enjoy themselves!

@Martin @kjrunnin Thanks for the tips. My kids are all 21 and up. They’re bringing friends or girlfriends. There will be no encouragement to ditch. They will likely tell me where to go and how to arrive safely. But they know dad usually buys a couple of rounds or all of them do they tolerate me to a degree. Or my wife will tell me not to bug them. The most likely scenario will be a breakfast check in at the hotel or the police station. I have some steam to blow off so I’m looking forward to this immensely.

Monaco might not be on the circuit soon anyway. Hearing some debate about it because F1 has grandfathered cheap fees for them that are too low now, and as @KHilgendorf mentioned it’s relatively “boring”. The atmosphere I’m sure is superb.

I can't wait till @Martin has enough experience to write up a first hand guide to SE Michigan. That's gonna be great.
@Craig_D, have a great trip bud!
@Aaron Webstey I heard Sudbury's great and has an amazing amount of hot girls. Montreal is better?

Well 2 of my kids are there as of last night after surviving the Pearson airport gong show and report that the beer is almost too good and the girls are pretty "friendly". One suggested I bring bail money, though I'm not sure if its for him or me.

@Craig_D I recently learned that my parents kept $10k in cash form the time my brother and I were in high school through me turning about 30 for just this sort of situation - bailing us out for some dumbass event. They almost needed it once for my brother - he was cuffed but never taken in - but they blew it on a vacation before I almost needed it a coupe years ago (I was released without bail).

Not the start I’d hoped for. Looks like a wrong turn at Albuquerque or the pilot is drunk. Got diverted due to thunderstorms.

Gets even better. Basically Air Canada couldn’t get us to Montreal. Stayed the night in Pearson airport waiting in a line that meant nothing. Ended up trying to rent a car but couldn’t because I didn’t have 2 pieces of photo ID (why???). Ended up catching a ride (5 hour drive) to Montreal with some other frustrated travellers (WestJet) and made it in time to watch the last practice session of the day. Managed to also find this beauty. The Girafe in Old Montreal. 3 litres of beer.

@wchevron Completely different sporting event that I've ever attended. Just a different environment. Competing music between the Heineken area and the Monster Zone was interesting.

Once I figured out I could buy beer by the 24 pack it cut down the trips to the beer booths.

Rain on Qualification day shook up the pecking order a bit otherwise Sunday would have been a bit boring. The top 3 car manufacturers are on a different level. You could hear it and the RedBull's acceleration is way better than the Ferrari.

Checo and Shumaker both retired at our corner. Interesting to see the safety crews in action and the crowd response to a simple Checo wave after there was a pretty raucous chant. My wife used the portapotty that Shumaker punched so my kids were getting some mileage out of that after. We walked the track after which was interesting. The skid marks Tsonoda left on his way into the wall out of the pit were impressive. Shows how little time the have to react.

Overall just a great weekend away even with the travel issues. Got refunded for my tickets so I had way more money for beer (you need it). Nothing is cheap on the grounds but I really did not care. The highlight for the kids was the cops giving away all the confiscated booze on the way out on Sunday.
