Vertical bike mounts

StruangStruang Member, POTM

Anyone got recommendations for vertical bike storage? I feel that I could get better use of the space in my shed by storing my bikes vertically, anyone do this and recommend a bracket? Or anyone got words of wisdom that they aren't as good an idea as they seem?

Buy a big hook at the hardware store and put it into a stud. Hang your front wheel from the hook with the back wheel resting on the wall. Measure over 16 inches. Repeat. If you want to get fancy put a piece of wood where the back wheel contacts the wall. If anyone suggests a more expensive solution like those awesome swinging ones that DC Rainmaker has, throw some of the hundreds of dollars you saved at them. (Works best if you are Canadian and can throw loonies.)

*Assumes you do not have carbon fairing wheels.

I'm not a fan of the vertical mounts since the bike sticks 3-4 feet out from the wall, and isn't particularly stable - the bike tends to swing around a little bit and can fall pretty easily when you bump into it. I much prefer to mount them horizontally by the top tube, but high enough to be out of the way.

@Martin said it. Just buy the hooks and find the studs (there will be at least 1 stud at the Sworry Trials).
I do that for everything in my garage, except for the awesome, huge quality to price value wire rack shelving I ordered from Costco online after @P_Cottrell demonstrated its excellence. Those shelves come with hooks that also double as bike hangars (the issue of the bike sticking out from the wall is valid, but where I have the shelving, it's less bothersome. The rest of the hooks I'm using on the ceiling, so the stickout issue is simply exchanged for the "hit my head" issue.
    TWO items confirm this advice:
    1. If you go fancy, how can you maintain Roostership with a clear conscience
    2. @P_Cottrell and I seem to have a thing for racks.

I made one out of 2x4 Maple but any 2x4 would work. Bikes mount horizontal by the top tube. In a 7'6" tall space you should be able to hang 2 bikes. Attached a sketch. Basically 2 vertical 2x4. Somewhere near the bottom 2-2x4 on an angle to counterweight the bikes. Or if you can screw the vertical 2x4 to the wall you don't need to angle the bottom. 4-18" pieces screwed to the vertical 2x4's,sticking straight out. I notched a U shape in the top of them to rest the top tube. Sketch is a better explanation.

I mount mine horizontally as well... but not in the garage because I'm the fool who downsized and moved into a condo in the city a few months before a global pandemic, because I hated my commute, only to find wfh became our new norm. But I digress.

I needed something that looked nice because they're on my dining room wall. There's a lot of pretty sweet looking mounts out there but most wouldn't work with my bike because it's so small.

I think I ordered these off of etsy for $40 apiece. And then I hot glued some felt onto the wood for a little protection.

If my wife would let me hang my bikes on the main floor, I would certainly go with a horizontal. But with kids bikes we have something like 8 bikes to put away, so the vertical solution in the basement is the only option that doesn't result in marital strife.

I think the N+1 approach to bike acquisition may hamper my ability to go with @kjrunnin horizontal approach.

Even I think hanging bikes in the Kitchen or Bathroom is going a bit far

When we downsized, I went from 5 bikes to 2 (then 1, then 2, then 1, now 1 & waiting for 1) so yeah, not practical if you have a fleet.

I would actually prefer they not be on the dining room wall but it is the only wall space big enough that is not windows, except where the TV is mounted or the wall by the stairway to our rooftop deck. I had hoped I could mount them there but they would have to be above the trim to not be in the way and that's too high to be practical. If my daughter ever moves out, they'll go in her room.

@kjrunnin , can you get the stylish wood block mounts with the extensions for stemware?
