Project sub7/sub8

StruangStruang Member, POTM
So what are peoples thoughts on this?

https://www.sub7sub8.com/

For Lucy to go Sub 8hrs shell be looking to shave 31:10 off her time at Roth in 2019.

I certainly think its going to be interesting to watch them try and get there.

Very happy to see a project like this thats targeting both male and female records.

Not to be a party pooper but I don't see it happening. Either men or women.

It really depends on the course. If they find a current assisted swim, a point to point bike with prevailing tailwinds, and a run course with just enough roll to not lead to injury... maybe? But do we really care under those circumstances? Can Brownlee even run sub 2:30 in a stand-alone marathon? Heck, can he go over 4 hours of anything without injuring himself these days?

Women maybe, but cutting 36 minutes off of Frodeno's 45:22/4:09:22/2:40.35 ?? Where is it going to come from? 45:22 is 1:11/100m, is he going to cut 10 minutes off and go 1:03s? And then ride 3:55 (45.95 km/h) and run 2:30 (3:33 min/km)?

I can see the swim being really quick if you have still water and say 5 elite swimmers doing the flying V in front. The run is pretty obvious since the sub-2 project showed the way.

I'm most interested to see what they do for the bike. Is it point-to-point downhill? Is it drafting behind a vehicle or just 2-3 riders on TT bikes, or a legit peloton? With the right drafting maybe Brownlee could go without a TT bike? I am a little curious to see the power stats on a 3:50 bike with drafting.

As a friend of mine said today

I am a little curious to see the power stats on a 3:50 bike with drafting.

On the flats, a peloton going 50 kph requires around 275-300W. That equates to a 3:35-3:40 on the bike at powers these guys are able to maintain for an IM. But the heads of the pack are pushing 450-500 to maintain that speed. Non-draft, there are too many variables.

Full draft everything, there's a decent chance of someone being able to pull this off. Swim isn't going to be much (if any) faster than 45. But the bike could go 3:40 with a full pack and flat course. That makes for a draft aided 2:30 to 6:55, leaving a 5 min buffer for transitions. That's *possible*

    Hell no.

    run 2:30 (3:33 min/km)?

This: maybe. But I think the Norwegian has a better chance of pulling it off.

Ok, so I wondered if the "project" title meant it was like the Nike project. If they're drafting and pacing even a little bit, it gets way more interesting.

Lucy says it'll be fine as long as she can find a pool. Its only 18 minutes she needs to shave off the record.
