The weather was not kind with some hefty waves for the swim, and 16mph headwinds on the cycle.
On the bright side the locals were very friendly and all outside their houses along the cycle cheering everyone on and lots of support along the run as well.
Glad I did it and very happy with my 6:58:06 for a first result

No doubt this was my favorite race ever.
I've quietly been working my way back from the surgery and decided a couple days back that I might try to get out to War at the Shore and race the short course. I knew I couldn't be as fast as a I was when I last raced in July 2015 but I wanted to know if I could enjoy this experience I used to value so much so I got up early and did a race-day registration to see what I might still have in the tank.
A minute before the start I wasn't sure this was a good idea. By the end the answer was an easy one: I had a great time and simply enjoyed being out in the local crowd of Triathletes. I never could find that top gear on the bike or the run but I run sub-8 minute miles and that feels pretty damn good all things considered.
Here is my list of recovery goals I've been carrying in my back pocket since I jotted them down a few months ago. Not too bad. The DC run was super humid and nasty. And I hit third in my age group today. Three more to go.
My final race time was 1:04:02 with splits of:
Swim: 7:12 (300yrds)
T1: 01:14
Bike: 31:35 (11miles)
T2: 00:59
Run: 23:03 (3miles)

I'm not sure I'll race again, just had to make the decision one that I owned because you know, I'm a dude and ending things on my own terms feels important for some dumb reason. I was pretty silly - it was just a sprint but I broke out my aerojacket and aero helmet and speed suit and simply figured that if I don't race again at least I used all my toys one last time.
Feeling good about it though so you know how this stuff sticks with you. I won't do long course but I really liked being out with my local brethren on a beautiful day and that's what got me hooked in the first place on this sport. Different doesn't have to be bad, right? So maybe I'll find another Sunday to kick around with a few hundred like minded folks (and hopefully make a handful feel bad for losing to the dude with the hips of an 80 year old).

Behold, the greatest cat 5 ever in his element:
How is he not on a recumbent, wearing sandals?
Check out the matchy-matchiness of my jersey from last year (Coeur) with these bib shorts (Safetti) and the sock porn. I should get a time bonus.
I had fun but was very frustrated with the reality check of what happens when you basically take 7 weeks off. The guy who smashed me I have raced before. He beats me every day of the week, however he should have beat me coming from behind on the run. At the bike turnaround I was already almost 2 minutes down on him and I never saw him again until the finish about 6 minutes after he finished. I raced him in a duathlon just prior to my unplanned training vacation - in that race I held about 40 watts more for the course and ran at least 40-45 seconds faster per mile - I passed him early on the bike then he roared back about .75 miles from the finish and beat me by about 25 seconds. The race this past weekend should have been similar although he likely would have caught me sooner on the run since the bike was shorter. 5 weeks to try to get better.
When you race around here it's always the same crowd so you usually know where you are going to finish before the gun even goes off.
Ever have a race where you're just happy you didn't die? Olympic today on the surface of the sun. Heat index at 9am of 103F (that's around a million C I think) and ZERO clouds or shade. My 920 refused to turn on this morning to make things more fun. How does one run without a watch? Sitting in the garage cleaning my bike (read: drinking beer), so my wife my have an actual photo of me dying on the run. On a less funny note, someone had to be airlifted out of the race due to a moron driver. At least 2 accidents and several went to the hospital from the heat. Be careful out there.
There's some fast people in NE Florida. 6th OA and 3rd in AG
Edit to add near death photo:

You're the rig guy? You don't look like you worked on rigs....
More cat 5 ass grabbing on Saturday.. it was a 4 lap course with a decent climb right before the finish. I raced a tri Sunday too, I took 10th.. pretty deep field for the MN state championships.. probably could have done a little better if I wouldn't have emptied the tank at the bike race Saturday, but I'm having more fun racing bikes at the moment..#freesagan

Miserable swim to start the Aylesford Sprint Triathlon (due to not training in the swim at all this winter) meant 41st out of the water. Moved up to 8th on the bike, then 6th overall on the run with the fastest run of the day. But dang, 6th place and only 4th AG. Damn fast 40 year olds.
