I think @Granpa Chook has a point. It's an accepted "paradigm" that toothed belts must be kept clean.... however, I've seen data on all the points I mention except that one. It's a commonly cited "fact", but those are the most dangerous kind. In God we trust, but all others bring data. So, I'll put a bug in the ear of the friction folks and see if they'll do a mud slurry study on chains vs. toothed/indexed belts. Who knows, maybe we'll get some results.
