For the first hour, I generally go out at 90% FTP (which is probably more like 110% since I haven't changed it since losing 20% of my fitness over the last five years), blowing past 120% on the hill primes, then soft pedal the next five or six hours, filling my bottles with the leftover drips of warm Gatorade and water bottles at the roadside, and sucking what little liquid is left in the watermelon rinds left behind at the aid stations by people that are smarter than me...
That said - will you be riding in a pack? (I know Wales is ridiculously hilly, but this held for me on a fondo with a lot of climbing.) Because if you can find a pack where you are around 60% in the pack, 70-80% while taking pulls, you can probably ride for as long as your chamois holds out.

Just saw the news that the US has picked Zaferes over Spivey. I love Zaferes, but her form this year has been total garbage. Not swimming, biking, or running well and even her transitions haven't been good. _Maybe she can pull herself together in the next 6 weeks, but Spivey is basically a guaranteed top-10. I also don't think that I'd choose Zaferes over Knibb or Rappaport for the relay, but I'd definitely choose Spivey over Knibb and Rappaport for the first leg.
Flora Duffy is probably looking at the US and British picks and laughing her ass off.
