    @matt that benromach is a winner. Their basic 10-year is my favorite affordable whisky of any type. Though from the looks of things, your dad is a bit partial to the Dun Bheagan?

    We're both more partial to the smokier, peatier options: Caol Ila (combine the 12 and 18 for a real treat), Lagavulin, and AnCnoc 125. The Ardbeg OA isnt open yet.

    The Dun B is ok, but oldest in the lot, and Dad has been stocking up with new options since the lockdown. We drained most of it during the holidays last year.

    @Matt - Just looking at that lineup again. Which one is your breakfast whisky, the Fuyu? The rest of them seem more appropriate for post-11 am drinking.

    @matt if you’re big into smoke, Benriach has a heavily parted, as well as an extra smoky version of their 10 and 12 years. If you can find it, their importanticus fumosas is one of the smokiest I’ve come across.

    My wife introduced me to two unknown classics that you might enjoy - One Magic Christmas with a very young Mary Steenbergen ("An angel must show a mother the true meaning of Christmas. It's not just presents and materialistic things, but the people she cares about."), and A Smoky Mountain Christmas with Dolly herself and Lee Majors ("A country and western singer on a trip through the Tennessee mountains runs into a reclusive backwoodsman, and a witch.").

    Our family's fav for the past few years has been Home Alone, though. 9 year old boys + physical comedy = unbeatable.

    1st choice: Home Alone
    2nd: Die Hard
    3rd: Christmas Vacation
    I would personally flip the list, but that's just me...

    I'm Team Love Actually.

    Always watch it after the last of the workdays before Christmas. And my excitement at officially being off for the holidays always causes me to forget about the porn stand-ins storyline... until that awkward moment when I wish I wasn't watching it with my kids.

    A Christmas Story is definitely 2nd on my list.

    Home Alone, Die Hard, Christmas Vacation... meh.

    My kids (7 and 9) are all about Home Alone. Can't wait for Christmas Vacation and Die Hard to be an option in the future.

    "It's a Wonderful Life" is my go to with all it quirks and nonsensical moments. The kids actually sat through it last year and didn't complain - they must have been tired.

    Love Actually is a tradition for my wife and I, although these days she can't stay up late enough to watch it after the kids are down. It was hilarious watching it with my her and my mom one time. She had forgotten about all the questionable moments as she insisted my ultra conservative mom watch it with us one year. I just sat back and watched as various parts were about to come on screen and could see my wife's complexion change when it would dawn on her what she had insisted my mom watch with her. I basked in their uncomfortable awkwardness!

    We watch a lot of old Christmas movies at my house : White Christmas, Wonderful Life, Bishop's Wife, Christmas Carol, Miracle on 34th, etc. The one thing I have noticed in these old movies is that people are always yelling. Half the dialogue is people yelling. It's like watching a Nickelodeon sitcom.

    @Rash Watching the faces of grandparents and teenagers when the porn actor stand-in scenes happen in Love, Actually are a highlight of the season for me. I also keep hoping for a director's cut where Liam Neeson reverts to type, and the object of the kid's affection is kidnapped by Albanians.

    So apparently Laz's race director bad ideas have rubbed off on Gary Robbins... For those unaware, Gary has been running scavenger hunt style events since COVID hit... one in the summer, one for the winter. I signed on for the winter one and one of the challenges was a beer mile ...but with egg nog. The Challenge rules said 12 oz per lap but if that was beyond you, you could just do an ounce. I wasn't drinking 1.4 litres of egg nog but an ounce of egg nog a lap hardly seemed a challenge so I put my own spin on it. Which is how it ended up in this thread.




    Double shots each lap. Way easier than a beer mile, but new meaning to "feel the burn".
