5K Swim Questions

RashRash Member
Still don't know why, but I signed up for a 5k swim (wetsuits prohibited) this Saturday. Nothing like a week of prep to swim 5k.

Do people eat/drink during a 5k swim? I assume it will take about 1.5 hours (+/- 15 min) - no plans to race, just complete. It's a 3 looped course with the return leg of each lap on the shore side - i suppose I could keep a bottle on shore and run up for a drink each lap, but honestly I have no idea how these things work. I assume it will be a moot point when my body cramps up and I quit after lap 1.

I wasn't drinking, but I also signed up at the same time for Gravel Worlds (the 75 mile route) coming up in August. I don't have a gravel bike and just dusted off my mountain bike to find I have no brakes. Summer of Mistakes 2018!

I’ve been doing 2 hour 6 k swims. I never drink or take nutrition during. I think it would unsettle your stomach to greatly. Usually I eat at least an hour before and then will practice race prep by taking on about half a juice box about 15 min before I start. It will get you over the hump as far as the initial adrenaline spike you have when the gun goes off.

For the #sworry trials I plan on doing the same thing however I’ll be mixing in a product called Vespa. It’s a 10k so the effort is pretty steady. I won’t win and I’m planning on not being last either. Toying with taking another Vespa at the turnaround. Going to play with that this week and see if I puke in the pool. Have used it before most of my 70.3 swims without issue. Supposed to keep the fat burn going.

Sounds about right. I wouldn't eat anything for any other race of that duration, but just wanted to double check in case I needed extra calories/hydration to combat 1.5 hours of swimming in e-coli. Should be "fun"!

Awesome @Craig D ; they have an aid stop on the course for your 10k.
@Rash , don't worry about drink or nutrition for your 5k. That's only about 1200m past an ironman, and you aren't required to ride a bike after. You'll be just fine as long as you are normally hydrated before and eat a good meal a couple hours prior.
In the 10k swims for Ultraman, the swimmers eat/drink typically every 1k or 2k, but remember that they're trying not to become calorie depleted since they have to ride 4-5 hour after. This is compounded by the fact they want to finish day 1 and day 2 as far away from calorie deprived as possible in order to speed recovery.

@Rash listerine shots at the finish like in Brazil? I’d also suggest that you add some salt to your water in the morning before the race. I’ve found that the longer swims are way better on the days I salt load before hand.

@Tad_Machrowicz any idea if you can drop you own off or you need to use what’s there? The TRS TRI shorts have a small pocket for the Vespa so I’m likely going to pack it with me anyway

For an hour and a half, I wouldn’t fuel during. I’m currently training for an 11.8 km swim (because I’m an idiot, especially considering how slowly I swim) where I will need to fuel so I’ve been practicing on my longer swims. Fueling every 500m vibe of my Garmin, alternating a swig or 2 of Infinit and EnduranceTap “gel”.

What I’ve learned so far is keeping everything as liquid as possible works best and that training for an ultra swim is mind numbingly boring.

I've done a bunch of long swims. For things longer than 4 miles, generally had kayak escort, so had fuel on board and took something (liquid) q30 minutes. Shorter, usually tucked a gel into my swimsuit in case I was about to die. Practice treading water in the deep end of a pool and drinking before hand if you're going to do so, because if you're like me, you'll nearly aspirate a few times. I'm guessing that if it's normal open water rules they won't let you get out of the water to grab anything.
