Also, new for 2017 is a process for manufacturers to have "non-traditional or unusual" bikes approved by the ITU (before this year the process was ill-defined). The manufacturer needs to submit a description and pics and provide proof that that the bike fulfills the criteria for bike safety standards (ISO 4210:2015).
Disc brakes are allowed in the following ITU Events:
-All draft-illegal triathlon and duathlon competitions;
-Cross Triathlon and Cross Duathlon;
-Winter Triathlon.
I think the team sprint would be amazing (its probably the best to watch of all the ITU racing if you aren't a fan of triathlon specifically) but I don't like the shortening of the individual event. I don't think the "entertainment value" of a sprint is much better than an Olympic distance and it lacks some of the grit. The argument that long races aren't entertaining just simply isn't consistent when watching the marathon swim (10k of indistinguishable heads and arms) or the 5 plus hours of the road race where everything meaningful happens in the last 2 minutes aren't under pressure to become "more exciting".
