I type this weeks missive while nursing freshly mangled feet. So keep in mind that usually I am a proponent for going barefoot whenever...

Socks for 70.3 and up.
Body glide your heels and in between your toes.
Or practice your hot coal walking more often. I heard if you carry a boulder while walking on hot coals you can get faster as well.

It was my first Olympic distance event and the combo of canal water + threat of broken glass on the bottom was great motivation to complete the swim with a PR. Though all the energy exerted upfront did me in on the run.

To the point: run more sockless. Beat the piss out of your feet in the off-season when it doesn't matter, so when the season starts in full, your feet are already prepped to race. .
That said, before I raced a half last year, I had a panic attack about 2 weeks out because I realized that in ~80-90 triathlons, I had only ever worn socks once before and I wasn't trying to go very fast back then. I experimented a bit over that two weeks before every run, figuring out which socks worked the best, how to roll them, etc. Got it down to be a <5 second penalty. I still won't wear them in a sprint or Olympic though. That's a pride thing.
I'm so helpful.
