I never did endurance sports in my life. Then, at age 35 during the Great Recession I started grad school while working full time at a new job in a new city and wondered what the hell I'd been doing with all of my free time now that I didn't have any. I vowed to run the local Austin Capitol 10K after I graduated. That led to more races and more challenges and eventually to triathlon.

I enjoy the site, especially the sarcastic Random Triathlete Q&A. Keep it up!

I started running in 2009 to fight depression. Two years later I ran every distance from 5k to marathons (4 of them). Told myself, marathons aren't that hard after all. What hurts more?? Did my first tri race, an Olympic in 2012 and worked my way up from there again. Ironman broke me, so I'm back to racing sprints and hoping I can run a 5k on a good day. Triathlon keeps me sane and somewhat in shape or I'd be eating my feelings and drown my sorrow in pints of ice cream.

I love the community and the friends I made thanks to the sport. I never had regrets, but I wish I could race long again one day.

I used to run short distances in high school (100, 200, 400 ... triple jump(!?)), but stopped in college. After college, marriage, buying a house, getting my masters, I realized I weighed 40 pounds more than normal and was totally out of shape. I started going to the gym, but when the warmer weather rolled around, I found myself outside in our local park, just 1/4 mile away.

So, I started jogging. Then, I started running. I re-found my love for cycling and hit the roads and trails around my house on my old, heavy mountain bike. I ran my first race on July 4, a local 5K. After a few 5Ks here or there, I upped it to 10Ks in the fall. That winter, I stayed dedicated and ran through all sorts of weather and darkness and cold and snow and everything.

I ran a 15K is two-degree weather in Nashville (!?) and thought about how I could take my racing to the next level. So, of course, I came to triathlon. I found TRS through DCR and here I am.

Oh, and that July 4 race, my first? That was 2015, not even a year ago. I raced my first triathlon last Sunday and am already signed up for Rev3 Poconos (Olympic) in August. I hit the pool last night (because I'm still a shitty swimmer).

In short, it's been a wild year, but I'm in love. I'm STILL buzzing from Sunday. So, yeah... that's how I came to tri.

Got out of seminary at 225 and in a local 5k a 75 year old man passed me like I was standing still. Been running and racing for my health and to fight stress without as much beer ever since.

I thought for sure this was going to be about smelly old fish. Wait...is it?

"...polish rubbed off over time" - I applaud Mr. Kowalski's patience. Or is this a Starky reference?

I'd say 3 of these factors are equal influencers for me. To maintain health, offset alcohol consumption, and have a challenge - these are all the reasons why I tri.

I bought the "Triathlets training bible" while in high school... I didn't have access to a pool and the only bike I had was a POS huffy... Went to college, joined a fraternity.... Drank a insane amount, dropped out of college joined the military... Drank even more. 12 years after gettin out of the military I had become a pack a day smoker, I had the "if I can't have 18 beers, I don't want any" mentality and that was 4-5 nights a week...
Finally, on a guy's weekend trip to Vegas, I got shit faced, met Axl Rose at the bar at Hard Rock casino, and partied harder than I thought imaginable... Hookers, blow, bottles of Jameson's... That was two years ago, and the last partying I've ever done. I tell people I went out on top!
When I got home from the trip, I dusted off my bike, relearned to swim and was on my way to living healthy. And I got to go back to my parents and finally use the Triathletes training bible.

I was pretty athletic in high school. Then undergrad and grad school in architecture, one of the most stressful majors. I started smoking, and drank, then started to get anxiety from school and the unhealthy lifestyle. Then quit smoking, put on weight, I ballooned up to 50lbs over my weight in high school. I saw pictures of myself and I was a fat fuck. It was the great recession, so I had plenty of time on my hands. I started running, reconnected with a part of me that I forgot about post highschool, dropped the 55lbs, no more anxiety, i can see my dick again when I look down, yada yada yada triathlon.

I was racing bikes. Our local series fell to 3 races and about 4 guys in my category the last year I competed. So I switched to Duathlon. I do Triathlon as I hate explaining what Duathlon is.

Did one in California in 1987, what a magic thing except I didn't know how to swim. (thought I did out of hubris, almost died in swim I think). That planted a seed. Big names were in that race. Didn't know how cool that was to watch those guys go at that time.

Life got in the way, and my fear of the swim.
Fast forward 20 years, and I'm out of shape, +40 lbs., and just straightened out my energy by fixing a thyroid issue. Tried another in 2007 completely out of shape, again scaring myself on the swim.

Did trail running for a few years till I finally bought a book and pledged to learn to swim safely.
2012 onward has been the greatest thing ever once I immersed myself in the sport. It's absolutely an incredible addiction. Go TRS!

I did a couple marathons, did a couple of long distance cycling events. Then my mom died. I learned to swim because I figured I had most of it down, why not go for all three. And no one can see you cry in the pool. I had sort of shut down so running straight at something that scared the shit out of me seemed like a good way to grieve.

I still occasionally ride by the cemetery where she is buried (Mill Valley, baby!) and I almost always cry when I race because I started tri to find a way to cry again. It's also really fun.
