Runs

I didn't have them (today, at least), but I went for one. This is a big deal, since I'm getting over a broken bone AND a Morton's Neuroma in the same foot (what not to do: a 70.3 on pretty much no training and riding in new bike shoes for the first time). First exercise of any sort that doesn't involve walking a baby up and down the stairs repeatedly for 90 straight goddamn minutes since October. I was slow as shit, a shade over 2 miles in 20 minutes, but who cares? I'm just excited to be moving again.

Now I just have to ramp up to being able to do 20mi by early Feb for the Miami-Key West Ragnar Run. Why, yes, I am King Stupid.

Those are the absolute worst, aren't they? It's like trying to squeeze your asshole up into your chest while at the same time running as fast as you can -stiff legged- to the nearest bathroom or bush. And that's nobody's idea of a good time, except for weird Germans.

Everyone has to start somewhere and dealing with adversity and real life bullshit will only make you stronger. Just be sure to wear black shorts. Once had to watch Rappstar win IM Canada with a wicked skid mark. He was making his grand return post near death crash so he is forgiven, but didn't make it any more pleasant to watch.

Run 2 miles at a time a couple times a day if you can fit it in so that you can build up that base and then rock it the last 8-10 weeks as you have built up your foundation.  You should see an increase in distance for  each day and for long total runs.  Also, if you do have the runs, then throw it in with the kids laundry... no one will notice

Oh, I will only ever wear black shorts. I had to ride behind someone for a season of group rides who insisted on wearing a pair of what-I'm-sure-were-very-nice-at-one-point white shorts that were now essentially see through. He was a very hairy man.

I won't go into details, but you can imagine for yourself how hairy and disgusting his ass crack was. I mean, there's no way he could possibly wipe himself clean after shitting without using half a roll of toilet paper. And his poor, poor wife. She's a saint for consenting to have that anywhere near her body. But, yeah, I'm not going to go into details.

@PreachSwanson Oh, since I was able to do today with no pain (meaning I either waited a week or two too long, or just the right amount), I'm going to jump right into short runs every day. Probably the Barry P 1/2/3 plan, actually. Probably is, the RR is the first weekend in Feb, so I've only got about 7 weeks to go. Like I said, I'm King Stupid :)

The 100 Runs in 100 Days starts on Monday, which I'll be testing out as the grand return for the back.

And yes, black shorts only. Without fail, on every long run I do, I have to take a shit at the 32 minute mark. Not 31, not 33. I plan my run routes accordingly.

@yournotunique I'm doing ragnar mia-KW as well. Be great to rock the cock with you here in South Florida. And as far as the runs are concerned don't worry about it I've had my fair share of visits to the bushes. As a matter of fact I'm pretty sure in the Miami Metro Zoo grounds there is a strange cactus growing with my name on it. Suffered at least 5 "stops" during the bike and run of my first 70.3 eight years ago there.

I'm also in for Ragnar (Ultra) @yournotunique and @drjocy. I'll be at the Westin Key West Sat-Mon after the race until the KW Express sails my drunk ass home.

Have been working with the Barry P as well @yournotunique. Has been working great for me so far. Basically each week has seen an increase in distance and an increase in average speed...
    Good luck with the recovery.

So I think that's now 4 of us doing the RR. I think @_MurMan was in, too? Between my regular team and you guys I might die of alcohol poisoning before I fly home.

@MorganStyer Don't feel bad, because theres always, ALWAYS, going to be someone faster. The goal is to just make that group smaller and smaller.

@_MurMan first rule is you don't talk about it. "It", in this case, is the Ragnar Run Miami-Key West.

@ellsworth53t thank you. I was surprised that nobody appreciated a good schiesse porn joke.

And I'm in South Philly. Close enough to the stadiums to hear the fireworks, but not enough to hear Christie fart in the VIP box. I'd be down for a run, but not sure what kind of shape I'll be in. Got 3mi tonite at around 9:30s.

That sounds about my speed, @yournotunique.  I'm not too far away in Princeton, soon to be Lambertville, NJ.

@yournotunique 9:30s is fine with me, man.  That's about my pace right now too.  The wife will probably join us otherwise she will kill her mother.  Wanna tentatively plan something around the 27-29th? Whatever works best for you.

Made my triumphant return to racing last night. Two mile race. Keep in mind I have run no more than five minutes continuously before this race. Suffered my way through a 12:43. I requested death at the finish.

My back is locked up about six ways from Sunday today, but it was worth it.

ISO: inversion table. And a bourbon.

Good job!  So you are even faster when not broken then?  12:43 for 2 miles is fast.
    #KOAT

@AaronWebstey y'know, it's faster than my pre-brokenness 5K pace. That said, I also knew it was "only" 2 miles, so if I blew up (which I did) it wouldn't be for that long.

I think in part my choice to not wear a Garmin paid off. I couldn't look down and go "oh, I'm running X pace, I must be really suffering." I find that too often I rely on those numbers. Thinking for my next tri (whenever that is), I might tape over the display so I can't see what it says.

Had to wind up leaving work early, though, to get on an inversion table. The disc in-between the two vertebrae I fractured is pissed off.
