Deep dish wheels, too many flats and he ran out of tubes. None of the tubes thrown to him would fit the wheels he had. I pulled him at mile 121

@A_drizzle I look forward to hearing your thoughts on Gravel Worlds (whether that's here or on your blog). I meant to check to see who was doing it from the Roost, but getting back from 4 weeks on the road last Sunday, getting the kids started with school the next day and catching back up at work made for a hectic pre-GW week. I did the 75 miler, but had to get out right after to head to the soccer fields to stand in the sun all afternoon - not ideal recovery!

Hope you had an enjoyable experience in beautiful Lincoln, NE!

@Rash I had a very masochistically enjoyable experience filled with lots and lots and lots of cornfields in Lincoln, NE. It was a cool event. Words about it forthcoming for Gravel Cyclist. Single speed got rough into the wind on the middle half of the course. And the last 7 effing miles. Dear god. I ran 42x18 which was good except for when into headwind uphill, as one would expect. Shoulders hurt from doing the uphill lunge. It was a legit course. But I'm the women's single speed champion of the wooooorrlld!*

@A_drizzle Glad you had a good experience. I am not sure how they looped you guys back to the finish, but I think it was McKelvie road for me in the last 10 miles that almost did me in. The deeper sandy/gravel mix going uphill was not what I needed when I was just trying to coax myself to push all the way to the finish having been solo for 61 of the 74 miles. I was spit off the front pack of about 10 that ended up making it most the way to the line together and was caught in no man's land being chased by a small group behind most of the way. I finally dropped them out of sight only to then hit a really bad spot around the time McKelvie road punched me in the face and made the last few miles a crawl. Held them off, but I was hurting all the way to the line.

Of course, I only went half the distance you did so can't imagine having to deal with that after 140 miles - with one gear to choose from. Not sure if it was on your course, but for us there was a series of short climbs on 140th around mile 25 ("Denton Wall") where the steepness caught me by surprise and was almost doing a paper boy at one point to keep the pedals turning.

@Rash yeah no idea what the road name was at the end but it was 7 miles of rollers with deep loose stuff. The headwind had also picked back up by the time we got there. That was the point where I started tennis player grunting and having conversations with myself. I passed a dude standing over his bike with his head on his handlebars. It was rough. I was holding a steady 15mph average on my one gear which I felt pretty proud of...up until about mile 80 when the headwind got bad. Like you I ended up in no man's land.

I had a pizza and 2 orders of chips and salsa after I laid on the ground for a while at the end. I probably have salsa on my face in podium pics.

@M_Ware I learned a lot of things. Mostly a new personal rule about not coming off a string of night shifts, sleeping for 5 hours, and driving to the start of an ultra. That was dumb.

I also learned that herds of cattle hang out on levees at 3am. And that if you sit on the floor of the Walmart in Indianola, Mississippi drinking chicken broth, in full bike kit covered in sweat and grime and dirt, no one will even bat an eye.
