What is an Ironman?

What does "Ironman" mean to you, as a race and an experience? Is it mostly defined by distance: 2.4mi, no-draft 112mi, 26.2mi? If so, what are your tolerances for variance from those distances? Or is Ironman mostly defined by the experience Ironman delivers on race day, and the distances and disciplines are not consequential?
