What I would give to see a 10 second camera shot of Javi and Jan running stride for stride flanking each side of Lionel (no room for Patrick in my scenario). I'd take a still shot and make a new version of that "Determination" motivation poster that everyone has in their company somewhere.

My bold prediction is that he will do well to quite-well at exercising all day long.

He'll give up time on the bike for sure, so he'll have to work on his position and nutrition (he claimed to only have needed 2 gels at the 70.3WC) to get this right.

I fully expect JB to step up to help his brother now (and Varga can't be far behind, if only to pick up the swim prime).

This will be an unpopular opinion with @PevashishDaul, but I think Lionel's window just slammed shut.* I don't think he can run with these guys, and I don't think he can get so much better on the swim-bike for this shortfall to be overcome. Lange again, AB, Frodo. Gomez in the top 10, but not podium. (JB finishes in an ambulance but wins the vaunted "Golden Saline Bag" for most IVs in first IM.)

*I look forward to someone quoting this back to me in October. I'm way better at reading cycling tea leaves than long-distance triathlon.

Javi swims better than and rides at least equal to Lange. Hell, he swims as well as Amberger if not better (when he wants to). At 70.3 and shorter he is a better runner than any of the other contenders from this past year.

I assume his strategy will be similar for IM as it was for 70.3 WC. First pack out of the water. Ride his bike at his own pace, catch on to a train when it goes by and ride with it as long as he doesn't have to over exert to do so. He is smart enough to let people ride away from him. Ride his own pace for the remainder of the bike then run everyone (or almost everyone) down. *

As a Javi fanboy, I am looking forward to it. If nothing else, it should make it another interesting year at Kona.

*all assumes he figures out nutrition.

Based off of Gomez’s performances at the biggest Olympic distance races of his career, I predict losses to Frodeno, Brownlee and a miss due to a bike crash. Maybe Sanders will fill in for Whitfield and push him right off the podium one year.
