The Perfect Playlist

KenElPescadoPeladoKenElPescadoPelado Member, TRS/Baucco Team Member
Friends, Romans and countrymen lend me your tunes! Posted this on Facebook but would love to get some more input from teammates & fellow Roosters.

I am searching for The Perfect Workout playlist to push me through increasingly-long training sessions leading into Tri Santa Cruz Olympic triathlon in August and Challenge Aruba - my first half iron triathlon - in October. Doesn't matter if we are friends IRL, estranged family, or whatever - if you are within the 'sound of my voice', I want to hear from you!

Hit me with some of your favorites that keep you moving - genre doesn't matter. Tempo/bpm not important either, I'll shuffle things in sequence for warmup/cooldown or find a remix, and use Spotify or something to sort by bpm. I'll include some examples of what I'm starting with, but don't let that limit you! I literally have not run or workout with music for years, but with runs getting close to two hours now, this could be a little boost, as many of you well know! I'm practically starting again from scratch, so I appreciate all of your input!

Here's what I'm starting with:
AC-DC "Thunderstruck"
Florence and the Machine "Ship To Wreck"
Tool "Sober" and "46 And 2"
Black Eyed Peas "Pump It"

I bet @Matt and @GentlemanJerseyDave could write a book on this - give me the best you've got, guys! Thanks in advance for all your input!

I heard Lionel Sanders listens to Carly Rae Jepsen's - "Call Me Maybe" on repeat for hours on end while he is training, maybe try that?

On a more serious note Spotify has running playlists that will play songs that match your tempo- I believe it is under browse on the App.

Now You've Gone and Done It!!!

Here is a recent deep-cut, punk/metal-oriented running mix I put together. It is meant for a half marathon with a good 20-30 minute cool down after. I have another recent mix that is far more accessible that I'll post later because if I'm honest I'm the only person who'd ever run to this t(h)rash.

From my iPod to your poor soul:

Acme "Blind" (German Powerviolence because starting slow is lame)
    Against Me! "Transgender Dysphoria Blues"
Iron Chic "Wolf Dix Rd" (The Constant One is a classic punk album)
    Alabama Shakes "Hold On"
Chain of Strength "True Til Death"
    The Bouncing Souls "The Guest"
    Charles Bradley "Heartaches & Pain"
    Capn Jazz "Little League"
    Dikembe "Scottie Spliffen"
    Hot Water Music "Rock Singer"
    Jawbreaker "Ache"
Bad Brains "Sailin On" (see, I love the classics too)
The Beltones "Let the Bombs Fall"
    Clash of Rhinos "Impasses"
    Blitz "Someone's Gonna Die"
Billy Bragg "Milkman of Human Kindness"
My Heart to Joy "Seasons in Verse"
The Front Bottoms "Twin Sized Mattress" (essential Jersey band)
    Grade "Seamless"
Deadguy "Die With Your Mask On"
Don Martin 3 "Wheat" (some late run emo?)
    Groundwork "Channel 1"
    Murder City Devils "Press Gang"
    Black Train Jack "Time"
    Ignite "Black Light"
Chokehold "Afraid of Life" (something for the Canadians)
    Masked Intruder "Stick Em Up"
    Judge "The Storm"
    Leatherface "Springtime"
Good Throb "Acid House" (back to back UK bangers)
Public Enemy "You're Gonna Get Yours"
Naked Raygun "Rat Patrol" (best band out of Chicago...ever)
    Miles Away "Seasonal"
    Gorilla Biscuits "High Hopes"
    Snapcase "Incarnation"
    Honeywell "Undesirable"
    Into Another "The Way Down"
Youth of Today "Break Down The Walls"
Quicksand "Landmine Spring" (NYC - 3 in a row)
    Radon "Audio Illusions"
    Ranier Maria "Planetary"
    Samiam "Bad Day"
    St. Vincent "Severed Crossed Fingers"
    Title Fight "Shed"
    Underdog "Back to Back"
    Uniform Choice "Screaming for Change"
The Smiths "Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before"

@GentlemanJerseyDave - No Strung Out? Lagwagon? I'm partial to Fat Wreck Chords bands.

@scotty - I was a huge Fat guy when I was in High School. One of the members of Tilt took pity on me and traded me five copies of Fat Music for Fat People for a pack of gum at City Gardens in NJ - I gave the other four copies to friends and I broke that tape playing it so much. Some of it still hits my playlist regularly but not as much as it used to. NOFX, Bad Religion, Propagandhi, Good Riddance - all get some play to this day but not like it used to. I think the last Fat band I was way into was Dead To Me (not that last record without the singer).

This takes me back to Saturday night. I was post-UFC buzzed, at a pool hall and threatened to put $20 worth of Creed in the jukebox. I'll give Nickelback a sideways thumb though, I can work with that.

@GentlemanJerseyDave wow man, I only recognized The Smiths' tune on there, even the Public Enemy track sounds unfamiliar. Good reminder to include NWA's 100 Miles And Runnin' though!

I've got some listening to do!

If you like punk I think you need to start with Leatherface "Mush" - it is in my well-travelled opinion both the best and most under appreciated punk album of the 1990's. A classic that was hugely influential for the next two decades despite being a bit obscure itself.

Because I'm procrastinating at work and want you to regret tagging me, here is the more accessible recent mix I referenced. More of an Indie Pop/Punk mix with nothing too aggressive at all (i.e.. you can understand all the words and so can my Mom).

    Nico "These Days"
Frankie Stubbs "Dead Industrial Atmosphere" (acoustic version)
World Inferno Friendship Society / Leftover Crack "Soon We'll Be Dead"
    Palace Brothers "New Partner"
    Naked Raygun "Knock Me Down"
    Galaxy 500 "Tugboat"
    American Steel "Shrapnel"
    Cindi Lauper "True Colors"
Capn Jazz "Little League" (I mix this in a lot)
The Replacements "Left of the Dial"
    Communique "Poison Arrows"
    Necros "Search for Fame"
Turbonegro "All My Friends Are Dead"
    Hot Snakes "Plenty for All"
    The Hooters "And We Danced"
    Radon "Facial Disobedience"
And You Will Know Us By The Trail of the Dead "Caterwaul"
    Stiff Little Fingers "Alternative Ulster"
    Electric Six "Danger! High Voltage"
    The Misfits "Hybrid Moments"
Magnetic Fields "Born on a Train"
    Sticks & Stones "Story"

    Me too. Like 270lbs.

But I also listened to a lot of Fat Wreck Chords.

Favourite workout bands/artists/etc. are Girl Talk, Japandroids, Phoenix, The xx, Matt & Kim, LCD Soundsystem, The Hold Steady, The New Pornographers, and - of course - the aforementioned Carly Rae Jepsen.

@scotty, @GentlemanJerseyDave - For some reason the NOFX track Jeff Wears Birkenstocks has been on every mix I have put together since 1997.

I rarely train with music, but tend to the electronic when I do - Girl Talk, old DJ Keoki, those Tekkerlane 180 bpm mixes off YouTube for running cadence... When I don't train with music, my brain tends to insert a mix of Mahna Mahna (Muppets), Song 2 (Blur), Satan Gave Me a Taco (Beck), and Ain't No Mountain High Enough (the original, of course) on repeat.

Check to following metal influences synth wave groups:
    Perturbator
    Gost

I think Perturbator's "I am the Night" is a great record to run to start to finish - like being in a mix of a video game and 80s action film. Yeah, it's that good!
