Barry Siff Goes and Steps In It

From Twitter...image

Barry's supposed to be the face of an organization that has a mission statement of breaking down barriers in triathlon for all person's in the sport. Bit sad, especially when you look at USAT has done with the ITU program and generating a far stronger female field for Rio.

For what it's worth, the prize money in Western Australia was $50,000. For most of those based out of North America, unless you won, it wasn't worth the trip. But hey, let's blame the women who had to A.) overrace to try to qualify for Kona in the first place and B.) might be more savvy with their race choices than men.

Yes to all that, plus it's fucking December. Is our professional sport healthy enough that we can expect to sustain a year round, world-wide professional racing circuit? Um.. no not even close.

Also to be fair everybody says stupid shit on twitter at some point.

Agree to people saying stupid shit on Twitter. However; it's been pointed out by several how insensitive and stupid it is, yet he still has it up after several hours.

Also, in his position, he really should be able to filter the stupid shit he says on Twitter.

would be interesting to see the maths..

5 women at IMWA out of # total women pros = % participation
x men at IMWA out of # total men pros = % participation
    # women DNF IMWA / total (5) = ?
    # men DNF IMWA / total at race = ?

guessing #s might reflect a different version of "professionalism" (with the disclaimer that I understand pros have a lot of reasons for DNF-ing, including future earning potential, esp w/ payout being 6 deep).

I would suggest that in his position he should have a better handle on the realities of the sport, but what do I know? Motherfucking Dan Empfield is still respected.

Aw man, until now I've been under the impression everything I've tweeted were only the most intelligent tweets on the internet.

How does USAT grant funding? I assume they help offset training costs or travel or equipment etc. for those athletes in CRP and other programs for ITU races. Not sure though so am curious. also curious is USAT offers anything similar for 70.3 and 140.6 athletes.

@Jennifer Post non-draft, duathlon, cross tri funding is pretty much limited to incentive funding for ITU World Championships, so probably nothing direct from USAT for 70.3/Ironman races.
    Incentive funding plan: http://m.usatriathlon.org/~/media/9f2bc125af8c4262adb0e5eeec93b001.ashx

National Funding plan, which supercedes anything from the above list: http://m.usatriathlon.org/~/media/20467a68baf540cf9704479135a5e833.ashx

There may also be some other grants and such here and there outside of these, and it's possible it could go towards a non-Olympic pathway athlete, but probably not super likely.

Thanks @iank90 Very interesting. I guess I am not surprised ITU races are the focus. I was a bit surprised (saddened even) though to see such low funding levels even for the very top-ranked athletes in the world. I saw that Barry apologized but I was still curious about the reason behind his comment. I wasn't sure if he felt athletes that were being funded were not using their funds wisely (which, as you show, isn't likely the case as they wouldn't be funded) or if he felt his USAT role doesn't expand to the elite fields at WTC races. I can't figure out his reason for blaming the women given how much it looks like he has done to help develop women on the WTS circuit. Maybe he just had a holiday lunch with Dan and wasn't thinking clearly. #guysguy

Even if he did act as a "guy's guy," let's give him credit for coming out and apologizing for his bigoted tweet:

Working on an op-ed on this for the front page.

For what it's worth, USAT could wind up withholding sanctioning of WTC events if they so chose. Wonder if that would cause enough of a shitstorm (no WTC race would then count toward USAT rankings, which some AGers do covet) to get WTC to finally do something about it.

I agree. It was a nice, straight up apology. No attempt to justify why he said it.

It's also summer time in Australia in December/Jan/Feb, not winter.
  • Options
Correct, @desert dude. However, the IM/70.3 pro fields (particularly female) are heavily populated by those in the Northern Hemisphere.
